Looking for one concrete action you can take right now to demonstrate your commitment to ending hunger in our community?
Contact your legislators and voice support the Healthy Incentive Program. All told, it takes just a couple of minutes and makes a real difference. Find your legislators right here.
So what’s the Healthy Incentives Program, anyway? The Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) has doubled SNAP beneficiaries’ purchases of fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms, improving health outcomes for low-income families and supporting Massachusetts agriculture.
It works like this: SNAP beneficiaries show up at farmers’ market or mobile markets and use food stamps to pay for healthy foods! Simple. And effective. A huge benefit to both low-income families and farmers.
Between 2016 and 2017, when the program started, SNAP sales at farm retailers increased by nearly 600%.
Now, as the House Ways and Means Committee meets to develop its budget for Fiscal Year 2019, the Advocacy Team at Worcester County Food Bank, together with anti-hunger advocates, farmers, and low-income families across the state, is urging legislators to allocate $6.2M for HIP.
Never contacted your legislator before? Fear not. We’re taking the guess work right out of it!
Here’s a script you can use to help you with your calls/e-mails:
